What should I avoid in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is one of the safest vacation destinations on the planet. This is due to a combination of factors: it's a small country with no extradition process; no border checks in or out; and an open society that accepts almost anyone.
The most dangerous activity in Costa Rica is human trafficking of all types. Most of the work that goes on is to bring in illegal immigrants by working as the illegal migrant's day laborer, often at a low wage. Often they are brought in with little to no work or education.
Many times, it is the immigrants who find the work by paying workers less to drive them into the country. Once in the country, these illegal immigrants find it harder to survive and often end up in more trouble than they began in Costa Rica.
Currency and Payments
Currency and payments are two of the most basic needs for guests. A currency (also English: currency) is a medium of exchange that's used in commerce, and is used in many of the world's major countries. It is also an important method of accounting. Payments are important for all aspects of the guest experience, from shopping, to transportation, to dining.
The currencies in the US are the US$, the Euro, the British Pound, and the Japanese Yen.
Currency and payments can only be exchanged between countries in the customs areas at airports and borders. This is done by using two different currencies.
Guest should always pay in the destination currency, then the currency of the country in which they are traveling. It is always acceptable to pay in the country they are in at the time. If the destination country accepts the destination currency, there is no need to change currency.
Currency, Payment, and Taxes
Currency is used for exchange of money for goods and services.
Payments are conducted in currencies that do not include the currency of the country in which they are staying.
If a country imposes import duties, these are added to the bill price, and the resulting cost will be shown on the bill. The duty is often called "duty" and does not change the cost of the goods and services.
Taxes in Costa Rica go to pay for public services, such as government salaries, government salaries, and pensions for public employees. The tax is either a per-person tax or a per capita tax. Private individuals may pay a tax based on the number of people in their household, and the rate may be per person or per household.
Currency and Taxes, and Currency Conversion
Many of the world's countries have their own systems to convert from one currency to another. In America, currency conversion is generally done by using the US dollar.
Currency conversion rates are expressed in US dollars to the nearest centimes.
Costa Rica is one of many countries that uses the Latin American Central American System. It is sometimes referred to as the "Costa Rican model".
Costa Rica uses the Latin American Central American Fiscal Converter to convert currency to US dollars, the currency in which the Costa Rican central bank (Banco Central de Costa Rica) has its own currency.
An exception is when Costa Rica uses a fixed currency, such as the United States dollar, or a fixed amount of money, which is equal to the value of the Costa Rican currency, called "Bancolombia" (in the Spanish form "Banco Latino Americano"). Bancolombia is an alternative to the standard US dollar. In these cases, the official rate is the official rate (including taxes).
Costa Rica International Currency Exchange
Costa Rica uses the Central America Fiscal Converter to convert a local Costa Rican currency into an international currency at Costa Rica International Currency Exchange.
Pensito
The Pensite is a small plastic item that is worn under the left hand pocket of a glove when a person is walking through a door. The Pensite usually contains a pen for a short time, such as in a taxi.
The Pensite is usually left behind, but is not discarded. However, there can be cases where the Pensite is discarded, especially when the person leaving the door is in a hurry. In this situation of having to return to your car to get a pencil, the Pensite can be left behind and is left with the person who left the door.
The Pensite typically makes notes related to one or more aspects of a person's personal life (e.g., address, date, and time, and other personal matters). It is usually not a personal item of significance. Pensites can remain with the person until their death.
Handwriting
Handwriting in Costa Rica is a subject that is studied very intensively. The writing instruments are called utensiles. The utensile is usually shaped like a small pencil, and is often used by people who are illiterate. Most utensils are shaped like a pencil and are made of wood, plastic, rubber, or metal.
Handwriting is normally done in writing (or signing) letters or writing or signing documents. It is called "pensito" (handwriting). Penitsos can be made of various materials depending on the writing device and the situation.
Penitsos are not worn for the purpose of keeping a personal journal. However, some pensitos and utensils are worn by tourists visiting certain monuments.
The Costa Rican government has set the following guidelines for penitsos:
The penitos shall be made in the same size and in the same shape as the penitos.
The penitos shall be made of wood or plastic.
The penitos shall be removable, thus allowing the use of the penitos even when not in use.
The penitos shall not interfere with writing fingers and must be the same size as the writing finger of the person writing the note.
The penitos shall not be used or worn when the use or wear of the fingers of the person writing the note would cause the penitos to be broken apart.
The penitos shall not interfere with the operation of the penitos by the person writing the note.
The penitos and use of the penitos shall be in accordance with the regulations for the use of pensitos in the country of issuance.

Before you go
To answer your specific questions:
When you get to Costa Rica, bring with you 2 or more bottles of water. You may also need a first aid kit.
You only need to bring one bottle of water.
You can buy a pre-paid card or a debit card at the port of entry. You can buy these cards in denominations of 500 or more, though they can be difficult and inconvenient to fill.
When you are in Costa Rica, bring with you 2 or more toiletries (to keep the lavatory clean).
You can buy 1 or 2 bottles of water at home.
Pre-paid cards or credit cards can be hard to work and are not convenient. We would not recommend them for visitors.
You can buy them very cheaply at airport shopping carts and large drug stores.
You will probably need a passport at the airport, and you will need enough money to cover your airfare and any extra items you bring.
I recommend using a credit card to pay for your airfare. Pay with a credit card in Costa Rica, or a credit card that will cover your visa fees. If you fly within the Continental US, it is much less costly to pay with money from home.
The main source of your airfare is your national airline. If you are flying from the US, you need to check with the airline that you'll be flying with. Don't just grab an airline ticket, as the airline will likely charge you for it.
At the airport, check in or check out the luggage.
If you are flying within the continental US, you should be able to handle luggage without a problem.
You will probably need a visa, and at most, a Costa Rican Tourist Card. If you have a Costa Rican Tourist Card, you must bring it along. You will most likely want to bring a photo ID.
When you get to the port of entry, you'll need to check in and hand over your Costa Rican Tourist Card. You can do this at any port of entry.
At this point, you do not need a visa yet.
The Costa Rican Tourist Card is a prepaid debit card that can be used at the main consular office in Costa Rica as well as at various tourist attractions throughout the country. You buy the card in denominations of 100 or 500.
You do not need a passport when you get to Costa Rica. You can get a Costa Rican passport for free from the local consulate.
You can buy a visa for free in Costa Rica by visiting US consulates.
As for getting to Costa Rica:
By plane: The U.S. Consulate in Costa Rica will send you a plane ticket. There are a number of airlines flying to and from Costa Rica. We always recommend using the main airline, which is Air Costa Rica. Your flight to Costa Rica will be about 80-90 minutes, and you will get off the plane near the border. You can pick up your Costa Rican Tourist Card from these offices.
By cruise ship: You can also get a cruise ship ticket to Costa Rica. There are several cruise ships sailing daily to Costa Rica. You have the option of buying your cruise ship ticket at a Costa Rican consulate near the port of entry.
The above is based on the airline and cruise vessel information that you find on the Costa Rica Web site. If you are flying from an alternate airport, see this page on how to find your international gate: http://www.airnowair.com/faq/
By car: Many international roads are only one or two-lane. You don't need to worry about driving through rough terrain.
By train: You can also travel by train from cities to cities within the country. There are several trains running daily from Costa Rica to places in the United States (including San José to New York), and from cities to many countries in Africa and Asia. You can get train tickets through many train stations.
You can also travel to Costa Rica without the use of a passport.
